Advantages of Moving House in Winter

East Anglia Removal Firm - Reasons to Move House in Winter

Summertime is the peak time for moving house, wherever you live in the UK or overseas. The children won’t be at school, the weather should be good, and more properties should be on the market.

However, there are plenty of advantages to moving in the winter months as well. While, the thought of moving house when it’s dark, cold, and icy outside isn’t exactly appealing for most people, it can actually make your moving process smoother and more accommodating to your needs.

Here East Anglia removal firm Hamiltons Removals, who also offer storage facilities near Diss in south Norfolk, outline some of the key reasons why.

There’s Less Competition for Slots

Because fewer people are on the move during the winter, there should be a lot more availability of moving slots (and flexibility) when it comes to choosing your removals company. This includes the coveted Fridays, which many people choose as a moving day as it gives them the full weekend to get settled in.

The same applies to other aspects of the moving/homebuying process – you’re likely to encounter less competition when it comes to property prices, so you’re less likely to get involved in a bidding war.

There should also be good availability of self-storage space as well – you won’t be competing with many other people, as all the summer homebuyers who may be stuck in a chain and need somewhere to put belongings in the short term won’t be moving in the winter.

Any Physical Work Should be Easier

This particularly applies if you are doing DIY removals – it’s a lot easier to do all the physical graft – moving furniture, packing up and carrying boxes – if the temperatures aren’t in the 80s or even higher.

This means that you also won’t be overheating if you wear extra layers and gloves to protect yourself when moving things in and around your new home.

You’re also far less likely to be bothered by flies and midges and other insects (although you will have to be extra careful if the paths etc are icy or covered in snow).

Any Property Issues Are Easier to Quickly Identify and Fix

Winter weather, whether it’s rain, wind or snow (not to mention freezing temperatures), can sometimes reveal hidden issues with a property, such as poor insulation, leaky roofs, or faulty heating systems.

By moving in winter, you may have a better chance of identifying and addressing these problems before they become major issues.

It’s An Ideal Christmas Present

Getting everything sorted ahead of Christmas will give you plenty of time to settle in – many businesses either close down completely between Christmas and New Year or operate a partial shutdown, so you may well be able to take some time off.  You could then put the post-Yuletide time to really good use for unpacking and relaxation in your new home. It could also mean that you will have to use fewer annual leave days for moving (if any at all).

And it ensures you will have a great Christmas in your new home – arguably the best present you can give yourself and your loved ones and it should allow you to look forward to the New Year with renewed hope for the future.
