• Use good quality double walled boxes - This is especially important if you will be stacking boxes on top of each other, so that boxes at the bottom don’t get crushed.
• Fill boxes to capacity but do not overfill - Boxes that are overfilled and then stacked can cause contents to be crushed.
• Pack heavy items into smaller boxes - This will reduce the weight of individual boxes, making them easier to carry.
• Wrap China and Glass - These items should be wrapped in tissue paper. Plates should be packed on their sides and not flat, glasses should be packed standing upright. This helps to avoid breakages. Glass and bottle dividers are also available from our on site shop.
• Clean items before storing - This is especially important with items which are usually kept outside, and so might have more dirt on them. Making sure items are clean before they are stored will help to preserve them in good condition.
• Wrap the legs of furniture - Taking this precaution using bubble wrap will help to protect your chairs and tables and protect them from being damaged, or damaging other items.
• Take care with heavier items - Do not store heavy items on top of soft furniture like a mattress or sofa, as this could cause damage.
• Always cover soft furnishings - This precaution is essential to keep these items in good condition while in safe storage.
• Wrap white goods - Doing this will stop them becoming scratched. You also need to ensure that items like fridges and washing machines are dry and have their doors open, to avoid any risk of mould.
• Cover items with dust sheets - This will keep them clean and safe while they are kept in storage facilities.
• Allow for ventilation when stacking items - It’s a good tip not to stack furniture against the walls, as this could prevent air from circulating properly in the self storage space.

To ensure that you remember exactly what items you have placed in self storage, and don’t end up wondering where things are, it is essential to keep a list of everything you store, ideally compiling it as you pack.

As always when moving house, it is also a good idea to record which items are in each container and to label boxes and bags clearly. Taking the time to do this as you pack will make it easier to locate individual items later.

We do not require a list of the contents being stored. However, we do provide an inventory sheet for you to record the contents. This will assist you when looking for specific items, and it will also be useful when arranging insurance cover for the items you are placing in secure storage

packing materials

We would recommend that all items of furniture be protected whilst in self storage. Special furniture bags can be purchased from our shop, or polythene can be used for wrapping items at home.

We also sell Furniguard, which is a special breathable bubble wrap that is used on furniture. This prevents any sweating and we would recommend this, certainly for any valuable pieces of furniture, to keep them safe while in storage.
