Moving to Cambridgeshire
Cambridgeshire is now the fastest-growing area of the country, with experts predicting that the area's population will grow by nearly 25% over the next 20 years. Many residents commute to London, but increasingly people are also moving to Cambridgeshire because of the booming economy in and around the city of Cambridge.

Commuting to London - Cambridge is already one of the busiest rail stations for commuters travelling from the east of England into London. Now, with property prices in the capital soaring, more people are moving into surrounding counties. This includes many who decide to undertake removals to Cambridgeshire, in search of a better lifestyle. Peak-time non-stop trains from Cambridge to London's Kings Cross take only around 45 minutes.

Work - Cambridgeshire is increasingly offering well-paid job opportunities without the need to commute, as major employers move in. They are attracted by the good access to the north via the A1, east-west via the A14 and to London via the M11, as well as by the high levels of skills in the area.

Retirement - A recent national newspaper survey named Cambridge as the number one location for "silver surfers" to retire to, because of its hi-tech facilities and cultural activities, plus the good reputation of Addenbrooke's Hospital. Some people also choose to retire to smaller towns and villages in the area, attracted by the lifestyle and the Cambridgeshire countryside.

Main Towns and Cities Within Cambridgeshire

South Cambridgeshire
South Cambridgeshire is the area of the county which is seeing the greatest growth in population. It borders Essex and Hertfordshire, and is within easy reach of London. The most popular place with people moving to Cambridgeshire is undoubtedly Cambridge itself, famous for its ancient university - although it is now a two-university city, with large numbers of students attending Anglia Ruskin University.

The universities themselves are major employers, but there are also many other career opportunities available in the area. The high levels of technological and science-based industry in the Cambridge area have led to it being nicknamed "Silicon Fen". It's estimated that around 1,000 high-tech companies are based here. Cambridge Biomedical Campus is another major focus of employment, as the largest centre of medical research in Europe. Villages near the city include Grantchester, famous for its links with poet Rupert Brooke and now the setting for an ITV detective drama, as well as Sawston, Histon, Cottenham, Cambourne, Great Shelford, Milton and Waterbeach.

The nearby town of St Neots has seen major expansion in recent years, with people being attracted by its modern housing and transport infrastructure. A number of technology firms are also based here.

Mid Cambridgeshire
Bordering Bedfordshire to the west and Suffolk to the east, this area of Cambridgeshire boasts one of the county's most famous landmarks - Ely Cathedral. The small city of Ely was chosen in one survey as the place with the best lifestyle in all of Britain, because of the high salary levels that residents enjoy, together with high life expectancy and long hours of sunshine.

Another major town in the area is Huntingdon, which is just an hour from London by train and has an historic town centre with a good mix of shops, as well as its famous racecourse. The small town of Godmanchester is just a few miles away. Also popular are the market towns of St Ives and Chatteris, which is an important base for agricultural processing. Sawtry is a village sought after by commuters moving into the area, while other communities in this part of the county include the small town of Soham and the villages of Littleport, Burwell, Warboys and Ramsey.

North Cambridgeshire
This area of the county shares borders with Norfolk and Lincolnshire. While much of it is rural, it is also the home of the largest city in the county, Peterborough. The cathedral city has seen major economic growth in recent years, with more than 1,500 new companies set up here during 2013 alone. Property prices here are cheaper than in much of the county, making it especially attractive to companies looking to relocate, as well as to individuals.

Other centres of population in this area include the market towns of Wisbech, March and Whittlesey and the village of Yaxley. There are many food processing companies in this area because of the important role of the Fens in growing vegetables, employing thousands of people.
