Hull has its roots in the 12th century when the Monks of Meaux Avenue needed a port and built a quay on the junction of the Hull and Humber rivers. It is a thriving city and over the years it has been known as a market town, fishing and whaling centre, military port and industrial city. In modern times, it has seen the completion of various construction works including the redevelopment of the Ferensway, the main thoroughfare, and the opening of the Hull Truck Theatre.
As well as being known for its historic buildings and attractions, Hull has been declared the UK City of Culture for 2017. It benefits from a thriving arts scene, with the Hull New Theatre the largest live venue, and it has a number of significant museums including the Hull and East Riding Museum and Wilberforce House in the old town. The city also has a scattering of modern art sculptures and history trails and, in addition, it hosts several festivals throughout the year including food, music, comedy and literature festivals.
The main employers are the town’s port, which has a workforce of 5,000 and a further 18,000 are employed in posts connected with the port. The ferry takes more than a million passengers a year and the marina has 270 berths for sailing vessels and motor yachts. Other big industries include healthcare, tourism, education and well known companies such as BP and Seven Seas have a base here. Shopping centres and retail parks include North Point at Bransholme, Mount Pleasant, Priory Park near Hessle, Princes Quay, St Stephen’s and the Prospect Centre.

Towns and villages along the coast include Bridlington, which has a population of 35,000. This sea fishing port town is full of charm with narrow streets and alleyways, interesting shops, cafes and restaurants. Other coastal towns and villages include Hornsea, a small resort with a promenade selling resort items such as ice-cream, buckets and spades, and Withernsea, with its famous inland lighthouse turned museum. Other resorts in East Riding include Aldbrough and Flamborough.
Other popular places to live include Beverley, at the foot of the Yorkshire Wolds, which is an upmarket town with charming cobbled streets and courtyards. It is full of atmosphere and has a vibrant Saturday Market. Goole, close to the Humber Estuary, has a busy port and is known for its production of glass and clothing. Cottingham, population 17,000, has been declared one of the largest villages in England and is home to several accommodation campuses for the University of Hull which has helped boost its population. Pocklington, has some fantastic independent shops and art galleries and many people who live here commute to Hull, Leeds or York to work.
