Gloucestershire in South West England is famed for its beautiful scenery and royal residences, including Highgrove House. If you are looking to find an experienced removal company, Hamiltons provides house moving services to the South West England including to the city of Gloucester, and the towns of Cheltenham, Cirencester, Cinderford, Lydney, Stroud, Dursley, Tewksbury, Bradley Stoke, as well as moving home services to other towns and villages across the county.

Moving to Gloucestershire
The county has a population of 860,000, 15 per cent of whom live in the city of Gloucester. Many people relocate to Gloucestershire for job reasons, or to retire in a picturesque rural county. It is largely dominated by the service industry, although industry and agriculture have a strong presence. If you are moving to Gloucestershire, Cheltenham and the Cotswolds are among the most desirable places to live.

Education: Gloucestershire has several state run, selective schools, and private schools including the world famous prestigious The Cheltenham Ladies’ College, which counts actress KristinScott Thomas, and fashion designers Amanda Wakeley and Katherine Hammett among its famous past pupils. It also has two universities, the University of Gloucestershire, with nearly 10,000 students, and the Royal Agricultural University.

Employment: Career opportunities are a reason many people move into Gloucestershire. Gloucester has a strong business and financial sector, and a history in the aerospace business. You can also find the headquarters of mortgage lenders Cheltenham and Gloucester here.   Several well known companies and organisations are based in Cheltenham including the Government and Communication Headquarters (GCHQ), the Chelsea Building Society, Endsleigh Insurance, University & College Admissions Services (UCAS) and newspaper and magazine company Archant.

Property: Like other areas of the country, Gloucestershire has seen property prices rise recently, with the Regency Spa town of Cheltenham in particular demand. It has a high proportion of multi-millionaires in the town, compared to the rest of the UK, and was once rated the most sought after property location in Britain.

A Detailed Look at Gloucestershire

City of Gloucester
If you are moving to the city of Gloucester, the population of 121,000 has seen steady growth in recent years. The town is best-known for its cathedral, where King Edward II is buried and, more recently, where some of the corridor scenes in the Harry Potter films were shot. Other attractions include the Gloucester City Museum & Art Gallery, and the House of the Tailor of Gloucester, a museum and shop which is dedicated to one of Beatrix Potter’s books of the same name.

The city has good transport links to the rest of the country by rail, with frequent trains to London, Bristol, Cardiff, Birmingham and Nottingham, and via the M5 motorway, which runs from Birmingham to Exeter. For international flights, frequent bus services connect with London’s Gatwick and Heathrow Airports.

Cheltenham, Stroud and Tewksbury
Cheltenham is an attractive tourist town famed for its racecourse and the Cheltenham Festival, an annual national hunt race meeting held in March. It is a thriving town with lots going on throughout the year including culture festivals such as the Music Festival, Science Festival and Literature Festival. Around 115,000 people live in the borough which lies on the edge of the Cotswolds and also serves as a regional shopping centre, with a number of bars, restaurants, cafes and independent shops.

The hilly town of Stroud, a former textile town, is surrounded by the Cotswold area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and towns and villages such as Dursley, Amberley, Oakridge, Stonehouse and Thrupp. It attracts arty types – artist Damien Hirst owns a factory here – and hosts various annual festivals, including the Fringe Festival and the Vintage Fashion, Textile and Accessories Festival. It has good transport links, with its own railway station, and the canal network is mainly used for tourism.

The historic town and borough of Tewksbury has a population of 10,000 which rises to 81,000 if you include the entire borough encompassing Cheltenham, rural north Gloucestershire, and the parishes of Northway, Wheatpieces and Ashchurch Rural. Tewksbury Abbey, built in Norman times, is among the main attractions, and various festivals are held here including the ‘living history’ annual Medieval Festival.

Cotswolds & Forest of Dean
The Cotswolds, which has a population of 83,000, takes its name from the scenic Cotswolds which has inspired artists and writers alike. The main town is Cirencester, situated in the Cotswold Hills, which has its roots in Roman times and encompasses surrounding areas such as Watermoor, The Beaches, Stratton and Chesterton.

Forest of Dean is an ancient woodland and former royal hunting ground and is also a local government district. It covers the area from the River Wye and the River Severn to the city of Gloucester, and the main towns in the area is Coleford, which is popular among walkers, followed by Cinderford and Lydney.

South Gloucestershire
The district of South Gloucestershire has a population 260,000, some of whom commute to work to the towns of Gloucester, Cheltenham, Bristol or Bath. However, there are some major companies and organisations based here, and among the main employers are the Ministry of Defence (MOD), the council, Royal Mail, Hewlett Packard, AXA and aircraft manufacturers Airbus. It has some excellent road and rail transport links.
