Around 16,000 people live in the Northallerton, North Yorkshire's county town. The landscape, ancient buildings (including castles, abbeys and country homes), culture, education, excellent transport links and the friendliness of the people are among the many reasons why people move to North Yorkshire. The county also offers various job opportunities within the IT sector and service industries.

Employment: Almost 90 per cent of businesses in York are service industries, such as in health, education, IT, finance and tourism. Among the biggest employers in the city are BT, the University of York, York City Council, Aviva, Nestle and Network Rail. The city also attracts thousands of tourists a year from the UK and overseas to attractions such as York Minster, and the Viking Museum. The science park is home to around 80 IT companies employing nearly 3,000 people.

Education: The University of York has an excellent reputation and has been described as a 'genuinely world class' institution by the Times and Sunday Times. Recognised as one of Britain's top higher educational institutions, it has more than 30 departments and 15,000 students. Two further educational establishments are also based in the city including York College and Askham Bryan College. North Yorkshire as a whole is also home to several independent schools including Ampleforth College and Harrogate Ladies' College.

Hambleton District

The Hambleton district, named after the Hambleton Hills on the outskirts of the Yorkshire Moors, is described as the most desirable place to live in Yorkshire. It offers a high standard of living with good education, above average life expectancy, above average property prices and lower crime rates. The Hambleton district includes the pretty market towns of Northallerton, Bedale, Thirsk and Easingwold and is surrounded by appealing villages such as Felixkirk, Newby Wiske and Kirkby Fleetham.

The administrative centre of the Hambleton district is Northallerton, North Yorkshire's County Town. It is an affluent market town with a number of independent shops, and is home to one of the famous Bettys Café Tea Rooms.
