Removals to Somerset

Somerset in South West England is a beautiful part of the UK well-known for its rural landscape, the stunning spa town of Bath and, of course, the famous hippie-style annual Glastonbury Festival. If you are organising removals to Somerset, you will find so much to this county, from the bustling towns of Bristol and Bath, to the tranquillity of the countryside. If you are looking for competitively priced house moving services, Hamiltons provides house moves to all parts of Somerset, including Bath, Taunton, Glastonbury, Wells, Bradford-Upon-Avon, Weston-Super-Mare, Bridgwater and Frome.

Moving to Somerset

The county has a population of 910,000, and about 64,000 of these live in the county town of Taunton.  Many people relocate to Somerset for business development and job opportunities, and to enjoy a better quality of life for their family as the county benefits from good schools, country living and being by the sea. Agriculture and the food and drink industry (including the production of cider) continue to have a strong presence, along with tourism, the creative industries, nuclear power, renewable energy, the supply of defence equipment, and technology.  According to the Daily Telegraph, if you are moving house to Somerset, the village of Pitminster, near Taunton, and Freshford, between Bath and Bradford-Upon-Avon, are among the many desirable places to live.

Education: Somerset has some good schools including several comprehensive, religious, and independent schools. Among the private schools include Millfield, a well-known day and boarding school, which was one of the first public schools to become co-educational. Kings College and Taunton School are other independent schools with an excellent reputation. For higher education, the University of Bath has a campus at Claverton and Bath Spa University has a number of campuses.

Employment: If you are moving to Somerset to set up business, the county has a stable economy with a low unemployment rate, and attracts a large number of start-up companies. In addition, there are several large organisations based in the county. Bridgwater is a transport and distribution centre for companies such as Argos and Morrisons, the Ministry of Defence (MOD) has offices in Bath, and Yeovilton is home to a Royal Naval Air Station. Other well known organisations include the manufacture of Blackthorne Cider in Taunton and Shepton Mallet, the fruit juice company Geber Products in Bridgwater, and Yeo Valley Organic which makes yoghurts and cheeses and takes its name from the Yeo Valley (where the River Yeo flows).

Property: House prices in Somerset average around the £200,000 mark (2013 prices), although property prices are higher in rural areas. Areas that are seeing the largest population growth, with many new houses being built, include Wellington, Taunton, Yeovil, Bridgwater and Street.

A Detailed Look at Somerset

Taunton, Bath and Wells

If you are moving to Taunton, this growing town has a population of 64,000. It has a long and interesting history and is known for its castle which houses the Museum of Somerset and the Military Museum. Other attractions include the public parks, and retail shopping centres, and the annual flower show draws thousands of visitors a year.  If you are organising removals to Somerset for work reasons, a large number of big name organisations are based here including the MOD, Debenhams head office, and medical insurance firm Western Provident Association.

The county town has good road and rail transport links, including its own railway station with services to Bristol, Cardiff, London, Exeter, Birmingham and Manchester, and via the M5 which goes from Birmingham to Exeter. For international travel, the nearest airports are Bristol and Exeter.

The hilly city of Bath is a UNESCO heritage site known for its beautiful Georgian architecture and Roman baths. It is a prime tourist destination with streets such as the Royal Crescent, Great Pulteney Street, and the Circus among the most prestigious. This thriving city has some great shopping opportunities, with a number of boutiques and independent shops based here, and several museums including the Fashion Museum, No 1 Royal Crescent, the Jane Austen Centre and the Roman Baths. It is a prime tourist destination attracting more than four million visitors a year.

Wells has been a city since medieval times; it is a small city famed for its Cathedral and for being in close proximity to the Mendip Hills (the limestone hills which run from Weston-Super-Mare to Frome, where a variety of sporting activities take place including climbing and cave diving). The Wells Cathedral School is famous for being one of five music schools for children of school age. Cheddar cheese is made in the area, and the nearby Wookey Hole Caves are a prime tourist draw. The city has a number of bus services but is currently without a railway station.

North Somerset/The Somerset Coast

The coastline is in the north of the county and encompasses seaside resorts such as Weston-Super-Mare, Minehead, and Clevedon. Weston-Super-Mare, which has a population of 76,000, has various attractions including an aquarium and helicopter museum, and in the town centre is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), Ellenborough Park. Minehead, close to Exmoor National Park, has opportunities for golf, windsurfing and sailing, and Clevedon is a popular resort town with a Victorian Pier.
