Removals to South Yorkshire

Although South Yorkshire has some major urban areas such as Sheffield, Doncaster, Rotherham and Barnsley, if you are moving to the county and seeking the quieter lifestyle the region has some wonderfully picturesque villages. These include the exclusive villages of Dore and Totley which lie to the far south-west of Sheffield and are desirable areas that command premium house prices.

Meanwhile, if you are planning on organising removals to South Yorkshire, Hamiltons is one of the leading UK removal companies in East Anglia and provides high standards of service at the best possible prices. We regularly organise house removals to all areas of the county including Anston, Swallownest, Brampton, Aston, Turnerwood, Todwick, Treeton, Thurcroft, Dinnington, Killamarsh, Shireoaks and Laughton.

Moving to Sheffield

Half of the population of South Yorkshire lives in the Sheffield Urban Area, which has nearly three quarters of a million residents, and encompasses areas such as Rotherham, Sheffield, Aughton, Chapeltown, Eckington, Killamarsh and Swallownest. Employment is a major reason for moving to Sheffield, and its relatively low house prices compared to other parts of the country also draws people to the area.

Range of Jobs: Iron, steel and coal mining have long been the main industries in Sheffield, and the steel-making company Forgemasters dominates the Lower Don Valley region in the north east. However, today its jobs base has widened further to include other types of employment. People move to the area to work for call centres, the universities, the hospital, retail establishments, and the city council. The district of Hallam ranks highest outside London for overall wealth, with more than 10 percent of the residents earning more than £60,000 a year.

Education: Many young people move to the area to attend the two universities – the University of Sheffield, and Sheffield Hallam University, which between them have around 65,000 students. In addition, the town has two further educational colleges, the Sheffield College and Longley Park Sixth Form College. As well as a number of catholic and co-educational state-run schools, Sheffield has two independent schools, Birkdale School and the all-girls Sheffield High.

Quality of Life: Sheffield is considered the greenest city in Europe and has more than two million trees. It is home to 83 parks and green spaces including the 19 acre Sheffield Botanical gardens. The south west part of the city overlaps with the Peak District. In addition, the city has a wide range of cultural attractions, museums, and has been home to a number of well-known bands and musicians over the years including The Human League, the Arctic Monkeys and Joe Cocker.

Metropolitan Boroughs in South Yorkshire

Barnsley

If you are moving to South Yorkshire, three quarters of the Barnsley metropolitan borough lies either on green belt or national park land. However, the east side is mainly urban and industrial, and is where most of the 232,000 population live. The main industries were coal mining and glass making, and the town still has a number of brass bands which originated from the mining communities. Barnsley has various high street shops and there are several retail parks outside the town centre, with work due to start on a new shopping centre in 2015. Another major employer is Barnsley College (where the Arctic Monkeys studied music) and University Centre Barnsley.

Among the towns, wards and villages in the borough are Athersley, once open farmland and woodland which has been turned into housing estates, Monk Bretton, once a small village that again has rapidly expanded, and Darton, a large village with its own railway station that has links to Sheffield and Leeds.

Silkstone, which includes Silkstone Common on the foothills of the Pennines, is home to a number of independent shops and is a sought after village within easy reach of Penistone Grammar School. The nearby village of Penistone, which is surrounded by farmland, is another desirable place to live and draws large crowds to its annual agricultural show.

Doncaster

The metropolitan borough of Doncaster has a population of around 300,000 and includes the town of Doncaster, as well as the towns of Conisbrough, Thorne, Bawtry, Tickhill and Mexborough. Doncaster itself was historically an industrial and mining town, although it is now moving towards a more serviced based economy. It has seen continuous growth and development in recent years, including the recent development in the Waterdale area of the town and Doncaster Lakeside. A big attraction is the market with 600 or so stalls, the twice monthly farmers’ market, and the Frenchgate development with 90 stores.

The borough was traditionally a wealthy area, with many landowners, large houses and stately homes. Among them are the Mansion House on the High Street, Wheatley Hall, Nether Hall and the much visited Grade I listed Cusworth Hall and Park, a country house museum set amidst beautifully landscaped grounds. Some people who move to Doncaster commute to Sheffield to work, which is just 20 miles away, and the town also benefits from its own airport.

Rotherham

The borough of Rotherham encompasses a large area, not only Rotherham, but also the surrounding rural area, and the towns of Dinnington, Laughton, Swinton, Maltby, Rawmarsh, and Wath-upon-Dearne. Away from Rotherham town centre, the borough is mainly rural with large country houses and attractive open farmland. A popular place for shopping in the area is the Meadow Hall Shopping Centre in Sheffield, just nine miles from Rotherham, which has 280 stores including a selection of high street brands and designer clothes stores, a food court and multiplex cinema.

If you are planning removals to South Yorkshire, you will want to find value for money removal companies, such as Hamiltons. We provide a high quality household removals service at competitive prices.
