About The Hague
The Hague or Den Haag, is home to Holland’s seat of Government and to many international institutions. These include The Permanent Court of Arbitration, The International Court of Justice, Europol and the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, to name but a few. Holland’s Royal City, The Hague is a city of wide, elegant tree lined avenues, unusual and interesting boutiques, fine restaurants and a fascinating history. Many embassies reside here as well as the European head quarters of many multinational companies. It is a place for business, international trade, politics and Royalty.
As you may imagine, the buildings here are very impressive and stately. The Binnenhof complex, the meeting place of the Dutch Parliament, has been in place since the middle of the15th Century. The original buildings have been added to many times over the years and were most recently worked on in 1992. They now host Parliament, a number of state rooms from which The Queen gives her annual addressees and the offices of the Dutch Prime Minister.
It’s Royal, political and legal institutions set The Hague apart from Amsterdam and Rotterdam. Rather than attracting hordes of tourists or students with bright neon signs and the offer of cheap thrills, The Hague appeals to business types and homemakers. Many British expatriates permanently reside in The Hague and most of them have well paid local jobs with large international firms. For this reason The Hague is justly proud of its reputation as an affluent, conservative city
What The Hague lacks in terms of excitement and edge, it more than makes up for in terms of quality, green space living. There are 11 kilometres of coastline, some wonderful shopping and some of the finest Indonesian restaurants to be found anywhere in Holland. There are no canals here, but wider and cleaner streets lending an open, expansive feel to the place. The typical Dutch gabled housing of the 17th Century gives way here to larger 18th Century classic and baroque mansion styles and modern 19th Century designs.
The city is far from stuck in its ways though; the past 10-15 years have seen huge improvements in infrastructure and the development of large-scale projects like City Hall and the central library. Both of these structures are located just walking distance from Den Haag Central Railway station, which is itself, undergoing massive improvement. It is now possible to take an underground tram from the large pedestrianised central shopping area known as Grote Marktstraat or Big Market, to a new light-rail system, linking The Hague with the neighbouring cities of Zoetermeer and Rotterdam.
