One of the town’s main landmarks is the Profitis Ilias church, which is at the top of a steep hill. Once you climb up more than 100 steps, you will be rewarded with panoramic views of the surrounding area, while the church itself also has many interesting artefacts to view. Another top place to visit is Cape Greco, a headland at the southern end of Famagusta Bay, which has been designated as a natural forest park.

Many expats choose to live in the neighbouring town of Paralimni, slightly inland, which has around 15,000 inhabitants. This has seen rapid growth over recent years, with some modern properties being built, but still has the feel of a traditional Cypriot community. Other small towns and villages in the area which expats may consider moving to include Frenaros and Sotira.

Education

A popular international school in the area is the private Xenion High School in Paralimni, which opened in 2002, which is based in new buildings and offers teaching in both English and Greek. It has a junior school for 6 to 12-year-olds, as well as a high school and a variety of clubs and societies. There is also a language institute attached to Xenion.

In addition, there are English language nurseries available in the area, including Cots2Tots kindergarten in Protaras, which works in accordance with UK good practice guides and regulations.

Job Options

Although many people in Cyprus do speak English, it is helpful to know some Greek when applying for jobs. Many British expats work in the tourist industry, which is essential to the economy in the Protaras district.
