Moving to Hertfordshire
The population of Hertfordshire has shown a steady increase in recent years, with a rise of almost 8% between the census in 2001 and the one in 2011. It currently stands at around 1,140,700. There are many reasons for moving to Hertfordshire, including its nearness to London, which makes it attractive to commuters. Many people also move to the area to work for employers based here or for educational reasons, while quality of life in the county is yet another attraction.

Commuting to London - Many areas of Hertfordshire are within easy reach of London, with the train journey from St Albans to London taking around 40 minutes. A recent survey showed the town having the strongest property price growth in the country, as many commuters decide to move here.

Work and Education - A number of major employers have bases in Hertfordshire because of the county's good access to the north, via the M11, A1 and A10, and to London. The area is particularly strong in the fields of life sciences and engineering. Many people also move to the area for education, with the University of Hertfordshire having more than 27,000 students on its books.

Quality of Life - A recent survey saw East Hertfordshire listed as having the third highest quality of life in the UK, with high wages, good health and a low crime rate among the area's attractions. Lifestyle considerations are a factor encouraging people to move to the area, including Londoners who are looking to move out of the capital on retirement.

Hertfordshire in More Detail

London/M25 Borders
Parts of Hertfordshire bordering London, such as Watford and Cheshunt, are attractive to workers who prefer to live a short distance out of the city. The northern M25 runs through this area, making towns along its route sought-after places for London commuters and businesses alike.

In addition to the road access, Watford has especially good transport links, as it is on the Tube and also has fast InterCity train services. A number of national and multinational companies have bases in the town. Nearby Cheshunt is the home of supermarket chain Tesco's British headquarters, while Borehamwood is well known for the world-famous TV and film studios in nearby Elstree. Other popular towns in Hertfordshire's commuter belt include Potters Bar, Bushey, Radlett, Rickmansworth, Chorleywood, Hoddesdon and Waltham Cross.

East and North Hertfordshire
The East and North of the county share borders with Essex, Cambridgeshire and Bedfordshire. Stevenage is one of the biggest towns in North Hertfordshire, with a large industrial area and major employers including GlaxoSmithKline, which has its European research centre based here. The smaller market town of Royston is right on the border with Cambridgeshire.

The world's first "garden city", Letchworth, is in the north of the county, while Welwyn Garden City has a more central location. Both these towns were designed by Sir Ebenezer Howard and built early in the 20th century, featuring attractive tree-lined streets, which still add to their appeal for people moving to Hertfordshire. Companies based in Welwyn include Roche UK, which has its pharmaceutical headquarters here. Just to the south of Welwyn, Hatfield is home to the main campus for the University of Hertfordshire. This is one of the county's leading employers, with more than 2,700 staff and a multi-million pound turnover.

Other historic towns include Hertford, where the remains of the ancient Hertford Castle are a major visitor attraction, Ware, Sawbridgeworth, Buntingford and Bishops Stortford, on the Essex border. London Stansted Airport might be just over the border in Essex, but it is within easy reach of Stevenage and Bishops Stortford-an attraction to businesses wanting access to international travel, as well as residents keen to have easy access to the continent.

West Hertfordshire
The west of the county shares borders with Buckinghamshire and includes the city of St Albans, with its famous cathedral. As well as its historic buildings, St Albans is making a name for itself through its research and development facilities and financial services. Both the city and the nearby town of Harpenden are in demand from commuters undertaking removals to Hertfordshire. The new town of Hemel Hempstead is another major population centre and has one of the largest industrial areas in Hertfordshire, with a number of telecommunications companies based locally.

Smaller market towns in the area include Tringand Berkhamsted, which houses the British Film Institute's national archive, one of the largest film collections in the world. As well as its towns, west Hertfordshire is known for its countryside, with picture postcard villages including historic Kings Langley. On top of the good rail and road communications, this area of Hertfordshire is close to London Luton Airport, just over the border in Bedfordshire, which is a boost to both business and tourism.
